Happy Birthday Dad!

1.30.2011

Friday was my dad's birthday.  I really wanted to make his gift myself (since I've taken the handmade challenge... more about that here.)  My dad is a pretty simple guy.... not too into extravagant, really big into sentimental value.... so I thought that a framed photo of the grandkids would be lovely.  So I got an unfinished frame and I sanded, painted, decorated, refurbished it into this:

Sorry... I don't have a "before" shot..... just picture a plain wood frame.

It's not very clear.... paint is harder to work with than ink, but I bought myself a stamp that says...."Handmade because you're worth it."

My dad plays the guitar, so I thought a guitar on the frame would suit him well.

Happy 50th birthday Dad!  Love you!!!

Neat people doing neat things....

1.25.2011

If you know any woman currently undergoing chemotherapy, please pass the word to her that there is a cleaning service that provides FREE housecleaning - once per month for 4 months while she is in treatment. All she has to do is sign up and have her doctor fax a note confirming the treatment. Cleaning for a Reason will have a participating maid service in her zip code area arrange for the service. This organization serves the entire USA and currently has 547 partners to help these women. It's our job to pass the word and let them know that there are people out there that care. Be a blessing to someone and pass this information along.

30 before 30

1.24.2011

I have a new project for myself.....
Josh and I were having a discussion about how old we are and we were realizing that we are closer to 30 than 20 now.  I remember thinking that 30 was soooo grown up.  It seemed so far away.  But here I am...26, with 30 kinda closing in on me.  It's funny how we tend to think that we'll get to this or that "later".  How many of us have things that we wanna do "someday"?  I have several things that I've always said I'll do someday.  I'm giving myself a deadline.  Here are my 30 things I want to accomplish before I turn 30.

I want to:

~Participate in worship ministry again  ( here )
~Teach C how to sew.
~Obtain an upright piano  ( here )
~Paint something on canvas and hang it on the wall
~Be the speaker at a womens event
~Make a quilt
~Have another baby and deliver it VBA2C
~Master my serger
~Visit another state
~Master enough Japanese to use it
~Record a Japanese worship album
~Sell something handmade in a boutique
~Become comfortable on my guitar
~Set up my backyard homestead  (here here and here )
~Have the Okinawa crew over for dinner
~Picnic in Golden Gate Park
~Write/record an original song
~Beat Josh in a game of chess
~Make a difference in someone's life
~Cook A->Z with C
~Change a tire all by myself
~Give someone a makeover
~Win a contest  ( here  and here )
~Wash my hair in a waterfall
~Make my own headboard
~Attend a concert
~Take a class
~Milk a cow
~Learn how to shoot a gun.
~Blog through it all

And there you have it!

Will you tackle some of the things you have been wanting to do also?  You can do it!

Creative playtime

1.23.2011

I love toys that inspire kids to be creative and use their brains!  It's so much more constructive than watching tv ya know?  C was given this awesome toy for Christmas:

It's basically just 200 little pieces of wood.  Josh and I were laughing about how many it would take as flooring to cover the whole living room.  Anyway, it occupied our little gal for the whole evening.

It comes with instructions on how to make several different configurations.  It also includes two little balls that are very similar to ping pong balls.  Check out her neat contraption:

Most clever music video ever.  Great song too.  Enjoy.  It was all done by hand... no special effects.  All stop animation.  Awesome!

Don't forget to mute the music at the bottom of the blog first~

Time for a change

1.20.2011

I've been putting off painting this wall for so long.

I decided it was finally time.  So, while J-kun slept, I got out my paint gear and C-chan and I painted the wall.  She is a great little helper... she was my tape and brush holder.  (I also let her paint along the baseboard.)  All in all... I'm happy with how it turned out.  And I did it all during nap time.

Yatta!

The Amazing-ness of Human Milk.

1.17.2011

Well, I didn't do much blogging over the weekend because my little munchkin was pretty sick.   I noticed on Friday that he was nursing more than usual.  Usually I notice this before one of two things.  Either he is about to have a growth spurt, or a sickness of some kind is being fought off.  This time, it was the latter.  By Saturday afternoon, he had a fever of 102-103.  Normally, with a low grade fever, I try to wait it out and give his body time to fight whatever it has.  When the fever rises to that level however, I don't hesitate to give him some tylenol.  I did that in this case, and while he had the tylenol in him, you wouldn't know he was sick.  Each time the tylenol wore off though, the fever was back!  I noticed him tugging at his ears so I figured he likely had an ear infection.  I decided that I would put my milk in his ears and see how he did over the weekend.  If his fever was still around by Monday (today) my plan was to take him to the doctor.  I hate watching my kid feel awful.  I pumped into an empty infant tylenol bottle and used the dropper to put a few drops into his ears every few hours.  Within 12 hours of starting that, his fever broke and he is his happy, chipper self without the tylenol.  I'm keeping an eye on him today, but I think it's pretty safe to say he is over the worst.  I've used breast milk to medicate my kids on several occasions now, but each time I am awed and amazed at how effective this miracle "juice" is.  I tell you... the Lord knew what he was doing when he created our bodies.  So, newly inspired, I thought I would share a few of the ways one can use human milk.

Pink Eye:
Squirt a tad of milk into the effected eye.  I did this with my son when he was a new newborn.  He had an eye infection... it was really goopy and within hours of applying some milk, it started clearing up (with full recovery by 24 hours)

Ear infections:
See above

Bug Bites:
Rub a dab of milk on the bite to sooth itchiness and speed up recovery

Diaper Rash:
Promotes healing of diaper area.... wash with breast milk at diaper change time.  HOWEVER, if baby's rash is caused by a yeast infection, breast milk can make it worse... be sure your baby does not actually have a yeast infection before washing.

Chapped lips:
rub on dry, chapped lips.  (Also works for dry, chapped nipples)

Sore throat:
Got a sore throat?  Gargle breast milk.  It helps heal the infection and acts as an anti-inflammatory.

Contact Lens solution:
Forgot your solution?  Use breast milk!  It will get them just as clean and moisturize your eyes in the process

Facial Cleanser:
Makes a great, moisturizing, nutrient rich make-up remover.

Homemade soap:

  • 2 cups vegetable oil (such as olive, coco, canola, cocoa butter, etc.)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup lye (solid NaOH)
  • 1 cup breastmilk
Heat oil to 115°F. In a glass measuring cup, add lye to water. (Not water to lye). When the solution reaches 115°F, add to oil. Stir until the mix is silky; then add milk. Color will change; it is normal. Stir until you get instant pudding consistency (this is what we call "trace"), approximately 60 to 45 minutes. Pour in moulds. You can use almost anything, like muffin tin or cookies tray. Take care to not use metallic material. Let sit 2 or 3 days, until you can unmould soaps easily. You have to let your soap "cure" 4 to 5 weeks, until it becomes neutral. You'll get approximately 12 2-oz soaps.

Just for fun:

Vanilla Breast Milk Cupcakes with Strawberry Frosting
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup breast milk
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
Strawberry Buttercream Frosting
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 3 strawberries, hulled and chopped up
  • 1 1/4 cups icing sugar
  • 1/8 cup breastmilk
  • 1/8 cup half-and-half
  • 1 tsp vanilla
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line 18 muffin cups with liners. Set aside.
In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder until well mixed.
In a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium-high speed, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. With the mixer on low speed, beat the flour mixture alternately with the yogurt and breast milk. Beat in the vanilla. Pour the batter into the muffin cups.
Bake the cupcakes until golden on top and a toothpick inserted in the center of each comes out clean, about 15 minutes. Transfer the pan to a rack to cool completely.
Meanwhile, prepare the frosting. Cream the butter until it is pale and fluffy. Add the strawberries: beat for 30 seconds. Then add the icing sugar, 1/2 cup at a time until well blended. Add the breast milk and cream, alternately by spoonfuls, beating until blended. Add the vanilla and beat until well incorporated.
Spread the frosting on the cooled cupcakes and place a piece of strawberry on the top of each

So see?  Breast milk is truly a wonderful and beneficial part of our bodies!  If you make tons of it... I encourage you to look into this:

Be Blessed~

2011 "Goals"

1.12.2011

So, I came to a painful realization today.  I realized that I spend most of my life inside my home.  There are so many weeks that go by and I don't leave the house for several days at a time.  This is not because my kids are too hard to take out... they LOVE being out and about.  It's because I get stuck in a mundane daily tasks rut.  So from today on, I want to make sure that we spend time outside EVERY DAY.  Even if it means we hang out in our yard....(which has a long way to go before it's nice.)  I'm going to sell my pampered chef butt off and get some outdoor play equipment so that on those days where we have nowhere to go, we can still enjoy ourselves in the beautiful creation that is all around us.  Time outside.  Every day.  Who's with me?

Knitting fun

1.09.2011

I've been wanting a warm pair of wrist warmers.  It's nice to have gloves, but sometimes you just need your fingers ya know?  It's so stinkin' cold and it's hard to change a nappy with gloved hands.  So I finally decided to make myself a pair.

I grabbed my small loom, two kinds of wool yarn, and started working.  I'm happy with how they turned out.  Now I need to make a pair for my mom.  She's in a band and it would be quite benri for her to have a pair since she plays the keys.  I'll need to pick some yarn suitable for a rock star.....

If you are interested in making yourself a handy pair of these babies.... you can find the pattern here:

Join the hop!  It's waaaay fun!

Small changes in the house...

1.04.2011

As ya'll know.. this house is a constant work in progress.  Here are some of our recent small changes:

My favorite thing in the kitchen.  My home soda maker!  We are having sooo much fun with this.
Thanks mom for the awesome canisters!
I have mint growing in the kitchen.  It keeps the ants away!  Really!
This is J's "grow with me" Christmas tree.
Look!  There was a table under all the junk!!  Side note on the table.... It was a craigslist find.  It is actually a wood table that I covered with contact paper.  It makes it look so cute don't you think?  Perfect craft surface!
This area is a work in progress.... it will be a nice and organized toy area for the kids.  This shelf came from Ikea.
We had some flooding.... so we had to place a barricade of sandbags to keep water out of our unintentional moat.
My grandma gave me this cool wall candle holder.  I put it here and moved the pictures that were there to:
 Here!
C's room is too small to keep her desk in it.  We decided to move it into J's room and use it as a changing table/diaper area.  It's actually really nice to have the drawers for keeping things like this:
 Diapers!
New mirror.  This is where I sit and get myself ready on the rare occasion that I do so!  LOL
I keep a little basket of current reading material close to the bed.  I have always read multiple books at once... I never go through them one at a time.
I won these babies at my pampered chef Christmas party.  They need names.  Any ideas?
Yes it is.  Thank you, Kendra!
